If the very mention of Christmas fills you with dread, you’re not alone. For years, I saw it as just another pressure. A long list of jobs, expectations to meet, and not enough hours in the day to enjoy any of it.
But last year, I decided to try something different. I handed over the planning, the prepping and the endless admin – and gave myself the gift of breathing space. With the help of my VA, I made Christmas simpler, calmer and a lot more fun.

Turning the chaos down

It used to feel like I was single-handedly running Christmas. Now? I’ve refocused my energy on the parts I enjoy, and let go of the rest.
The real difference was having someone I trusted to support me. My VA, Laura, brought order to the madness and helped me rethink what the festive season could look like – less stress, more time with my family, and no more frantic last-minute tasks.

About that Christmas tree…

I’ll admit, this one raised a few eyebrows. I handed over the job of putting the tree up – lights and all.
It’s not that I don’t love the idea of decorating with the kids. But with two teenagers who couldn’t care less, the reality just didn’t match the Pinterest version. Instead, we used that time to watch Prison Break together (not very festive, but it worked for us!).
In our house, that kind of time is far more precious than baubles.

Christmas cards, reimagined

I used to spend hours handwriting over 100 Christmas cards, dreading it every time. So we changed things up.
I wrote a short message, Laura arranged for a personalised stamp, and we included a note letting people know this would be our last year sending physical cards. From now on, we’re donating to The Brain Tumour Charity instead – something that felt much more meaningful to us.
We turned the task into a mini assembly line at home: I stamped, my son handled envelopes, my husband did the postage. We got through it in no time and had a laugh along the way.

Gift shopping? All taken care of

Laura booked a short call to run through my gift list (already saved from last year), along with rough budgets. She came with thoughtful ideas, ordered everything online, had it all delivered to her for wrapping, then returned the gifts beautifully packaged and ready to go.
I didn’t miss the panic-shopping or late-night wrapping one bit. Instead, I got to relax and enjoy the build-up to Christmas.

Time for me, booked in advance

Pre-Christmas pampering was also taken off my plate. Lash infills, hair and nails, all booked in and added to my diary. I just had to turn up. Small things, but they made a big difference to how I felt heading into the holidays.

Less WhatsApp, more real time

Group plans can be their own kind of stress. Endless messages, menu choices, deposits, logistics. This year, Laura handled it all.
She booked our New Year’s meal, emailed the menu, collected orders, paid the deposit. She even took care of the work Christmas do – confirming numbers, managing the venue and sorting the food. I didn’t chase a single person.

A calmer Christmas, a better New Year

This isn’t about having the ‘perfect’ Christmas. It’s about having the headspace to enjoy the bits that matter. Outsourcing gave me room to breathe, and reminded me how good it can feel when you’re not the one keeping everything spinning.
It won’t be right for everyone. But if Christmas has started to feel more stressful than joyful, outsourcing might just change the game.
